Will a Defibrillator shock a beating heart?
Will a defibrillator shock a beating heart? No. Defibrillators have advanced technology that determines whether the heart requires a shock or not. If there is a regular heart signal it will not shock the heart. Having a Defibrillator within 3-4 minutes of a patient could save thousands of lives a year.
In this article, we will discuss a few frequently asked questions about Defibrillator Shocks.
When will a Defibrillator apply a shock?
When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, a malfunction in the signal between the brain and the heart causes the heart to quiver. When the heart is quivering it is not providing adequate blood flow through the body. A shock from the Defibrillator will allow the heart to reorganize its electrical signals and pump again.
Will a Defibrillator restart a dead heart?
If there is no heart activity at all, an AED will not restart a dead or a stopped heart. It will say “no shock advised.” However, this doesn’t mean that all is lost. When emergency services arrive, they can use adrenaline to stimulate heart activity, and in some cases, a person can be revived. So it is vital to keep providing CPR to the patient until emergency services tell you to stop.
Will a Defibrillator keep shocking?
After each shock, the Defibrillator will analyze if its shock revived the patient. If the shock didn’t, the Defibrillator will warn you to stand clear and then shock again if a heart rhythm is found.
If a patient regains consciousness, it is wise to leave the Defibrillator attached to them until emergency services advise you to remove it. In some cases, a revived patient may lose consciousness and stop breathing again. Defibrillation may need to occur multiple times before emergency services arrive.
